Tamara Brauchler

Tamara joined Sisters Of The Road in April 2004 as a cook, and was promoted to Kitchen Manager before she left Sisters in 2006.  Before she took her job at Sisters, she had been cooking dinner for women at an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment facility for some time and had come a long way in her recovery. She understood what it felt like to have a loss of dignity and how you could feel like a misfit in this society.  Tamara realized how Sisters’ philosophy of non-violence and respect and dignity for all jelled with her own beliefs. She knew this was a place she wanted to be and was thrilled to be offered the job.

Born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio where most of her family still lives, she graduated from Ohio State University, with a degree in psychology.  She came to Portland when her older brother Brock asked her to join him.

“My second year in Portland I discovered methamphetamine which took me to places I never knew existed and not in a good way. But I had the mentorship of a lot of strong women that helped me to pull myself out of my pit and here I am! Sisters is an important part of my recovery now.  I feel like I’m part of something really important and contributing something positive with my life.
“People know that something different is happening here when they walk in the door.  Everyone is greeted with a smile and we know almost everyone’s name.  I think it is an oasis for people who are experiencing some harsh realities when they walk back out the door.  People can get their mail here and phone messages. But mostly, people are just treated really well.  There is a lot of laughter and joy too.  The food is pretty darn good I might add!”
