Meal Coupons are an innovate way to address hunger and the hunger of isolation in our community.
What are Meal Coupons and Why Use them?
Each Meal Coupon costs $2.00. They can be purchased either singly, or in unlimited numbers, and then given to hungry people for them to use to buy a meal and a drink in Sisters. The purchase price goes directly to our non-profit organization, and helps defray our costs in providing meals to homeless and very low-income individuals and families.
For concerned individuals, the Café’s Meal Coupon Program provides an effective way to contribute directly to the welfare of the growing number of homeless and hungry people in our community. The buyer may use the coupons in any of the following ways:
- Come into the cafe yourself for a meal and beverage! Break down class lines while you break bread.
- Give the coupons back to the cafe; we will use them to help pay for the hundreds of meals we provide each month free-of-charge to women, children, and the disabled.
- Give them to panhandlers instead of giving money; this way, you are offering a nutritious meal to someone without the fear that your hand-out may be used to buy alcohol or drugs.
- Make them available to clients who utilize your social service organization.
How to Give Meal Coupons to Panhandlers
- When first approached and asked for money - give the individual your full attention.
- Tell the person that you don’t have any money to give, but you do have a meal coupon to Sisters Of The Road Café.
- Ask the person if they know about the cafe. We are a non-profit restaurant where every one is welcome. Sisters is located at 133 NW Sixth Avenue between Couch and Davis. We are a safe place for everyone to dine with dignity.
- Offer the individual a meal coupon. Each one is good for a complete meal anytime we are open: Monday through Friday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. (We stop serving meals at 2:45 pm)
- Wait for their response. If they are not interested, you might say: “Are you sure you won’t reconsider? It’s like a home cooked meal!”
- We suggest that you not reach for your wallet or purse. Keep the coupons in a separate place, like a pocket.
Thank-you for staying human—meal coupons begin a conversation!
